Former CJ Sereno given Seat in International Criminal Court

MANILA (ATRAS ABANTE SATIRE NEWS GROUP) – Former Chief Justice Lourdes Sereno is the newest judge of the International Criminal Court (ICC), the second Filipino and second Asian from a developing country to sit in the tribunal that tries cases of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, her camp announce last Thursday.

Sereno’s camp, citing a report from the Philippine Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, said Sereno was “elected without no doubt because of her advocacy on human rights against Duterte” in elections held by the Assembly of States Parties on December 14 in New York.

After waging a four-month campaign, Sereno topped the first round of polling, making it to the court with 100 votes out of 104 votes cast, an indication of strong support for her from the states parties, her camp said.

Sereno said her ouster is timely for a higher purpose and better position to impose and investigate crimes against humanity by the Duterte administraton.

“I will take my oath of office in July together with 4 other new judges. They are still in the process of being voted upon. The Philippines was No. 1 in the first round of voting so that is something for the Philippines which could be because of the humanitarian crisis in the country where drug dealers and drug lords are killed and punished by the state with or without due process. All 5 of us cannot assume office until we are officially called to report for work,” she said.

Sereno will serve a nine-year term unless the ICC Justices will issue a quo warranto against her position.

She thanked ex-President Benigno Aquino III for nominating her to the ICC and Kris Aquino and her connections to make sure that she gets lobbied and voted.

The ICC has 120 states parties and was established by a treaty called the Rome Statute that gives it power to try and punish the “most serious violations of human rights, in cases when international justice systems fail.”
